Tailored Coat
A client selected a unique, woven fabric for a coat that could be worn on colder days, had pockets, and would help her feel beautiful. Given these parameters I designed this garment and tailored it to her specific measurements.
Initial concepts for the design
These initial concept sketches tested out various ideas for the garment based on the parameters and the fabric choice. Ultimately, two options were presented to the client who chose the final design that would be advanced.
Final design flats
The flats are an essential component of the fashion designer's relationship with the client. These detailed drawings are the contract, showing what will be provided in exchange for payment. Providing at least a front and back drawing, enough details should be included to ensure the client has a clear understanding of what to expect.
Layers within the garment
Several layers are included in the garment that all play an important role.
- The backing: made from a black cotton voile, this layer stabilizes the loose woven fabric used in the shell of the garment. The sleeves were not backed to reduce bulk and increase mobility.
- The interfacing: made of hair canvas. It is used to shape the collar. In the hems the interfacing helps to provide extra volume and stability to the edges of the garment. In the front closure it stabilizes the buttons, buttonholes, and shape of the front edge.
- The insulation: made from quilted padding. This layer enhances the thermal performance of the garment. It is included in every panel, except the collar.
- The lining, hems, and facings: these are the interior parts of the garment that are closest to the wearer's skin and undergarments. They add a professional finish and enhance comfort. The lining is a satin fabric made from a blend of cotton and polyester.
The process
Making this coat required a great deal of precision to align its unique pattern across the panels and achieve the desired fit and silhouette. Hand stitching and traditional tailoring techniques used in its construction add to the classic beauty of this coat.
